By preliminary estimate, there are roughly about five hundred naval mines at Black Sea waters at the moment.

Part of them – previously belonged to Ukraine, and were stolen by Russians after Crimea annexation at 2014. After each storm, this mines taken out at the coastline and there pose a life threat to all those who had a bad luck enough to be within mine’s affected area.

However , the naval mines that detonate at the beaches, only the top of the problem. Any vessel navigating at the Black Sea waters are in the grim danger.

So, at the 28 of July at the Danube estuary, Ukrainian hydrographic vessel «Shlyahovik» was struck presumably by the mine.

Also, the explosions appear to be the serious danger for the sea mammals that are listed in the Red Book as an endangered species and protected under different international conventions.

For example, recently were reported that bodies of all three kinds of the dolphins, the natural dwellers of the Black Sea, founded dead at the coasts of Ukraine, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania.

Moreover, a lot of compounds that were designed as the warfare chemicals, stand out during the detonation, and are very toxic and harmful to maritime environment. So chemical pollution is another companion of the active naval warfare.

Before the 2022 Ukraine had never faced with the problem of naval mines deactivation of such scale. We have no sufficient experience, we have no appropriate technical equipment.

The only Unmanned underwater vehicle that belonged to Ukrainian Navy and used for search and deactivation of underwater explosives was « Sofokl-1 », but unfortunately it is out of order at the moment.

Central Naval Museum of Ukraine announces the fundraising to purchase new Underwater Unmanned Vehicle “Falcon”

This device will save the life of explosive specialist divers who forced to search for the dangerous objects, and will speed up Ed-mining of the Black Sea.

The sum is big enough, but even the quarter dollar saved on your coffee and donated for the device will help a lot!
